Plum Fabulous! Food’s debut at the local farmers’ market

For the first time in several years, we decided to share our Plum Fabulous! Foods at the La Grange Farmers’ Market. Although the morning started out foggy and humid, and I wondered if anyone would be venturing out on a lazy summer Saturday to shop, I was blown away by the number of people that came to patronize our local small farmers and vendors.

It was great to see so many people in search of good, locally grown food, canned goods and hand crafted items. What delightful conversations I got to have with a variety of shoppers who truly appreciate the farm-to-table paradigm.  We also got to spend time educating people on the benefits of organic produce and using fresh ground wheat (our bread sold out in the first two hours!).

The children were really excited to see the fruits of all our family’s labors really paying off. They excitedly took turns working the scale, writing receipts and baggin’ people’s pickin’s. Later in the day, after we were home, the children commented several times on how fun it was and how much they were looking forward to doing it again. I’ve always been reluctant to spend a whole Saturday morning just sitting at a booth, especially since that is the one morning each week we usually dedicate to garden work. But, not only was I wrong about just sitting (there was so much activity going on!), I discovered that the motivation to return to the market was enough to inspire the children to get their garden work done on Monday morning, in spite of our regularly planned activities for the day.

The garden is just exploding right now. I have picked over 100 pounds of fruits and vegetables this week alone! We will be back at the farmers’ market this Saturday, and hopefully every week after that. We may not do it year round, but as long as we have surplus, you can be sure you will find us there. This week, we will have cucumbers, spaghetti squash, butternut squash, scallop squash, Swiss chard, red potatoes, red onions, fresh basil, tomatoes (including our super sweet heirlooms!), fresh home-made bread (using our home-ground wheat) and my children will be selling chocolate chip cookies.

You can always get more information and place pre-orders on the Market Page of our website and pick them up at our booth on Saturday morning between 8am and noon. Pre-orders will be bagged separately and set aside, so if you are afraid we may be sold out of something before you have a chance to get there, it’s the perfect way to ensure that you get what you want.

Thank you for supporting your local small farmers. We feel so blessed to get to share our goodies with you, and in the words of my sweet daughter, it’s all by “God’s grace and our hard work!”

    • Thanks for stopping by! I’m going to try to get an article about microgreens posted this week. We love sharing what we do with others and we hope to see you again.

  2. I still need to take some progressive photos, but here is the article explaining how to get started. It’s so easy, I hope you’ll give it a try.
